California and Western Art

Bonhams will host its second California and Western Art sale of 2020 on August 4 with a number of classic California Impressionist works hitting the auction block. Granville Redmond’s Poppies and Lupine, coming from a private collection in Wyoming, features the artist’s signature color palette and subject, with a presale estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.

The sale will also feature a beautiful California landscape by William Wendt. The piece, painted in 1920, measures 28 by 36 inches and is expected to sell between $40,000 and $60,000. American genre painter Robert Eskridge’s Hukilau (est. $20/30,000) will also be available. Eskridge moved to Honolulu in 1932, with this painting having been completed in 1940. The Marine Sale

Eldred’s two-day Marine Sale will feature the Kelton Collection of Marine Art and Artifacts. Richard Kelton—who built the collection of paintings, ship models, navigation instruments and more—was an avid and well-known collector who created a foundation in 1982 to exhibit, loan and research his materials. Included in the offerings is Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen’s The Steamship Cottage City at Sea, which is expected to sell between $10,000 and $15,000.

Also available in the sale, from outside this collection, is Robert Salmon’s Shipping of Greenwich, which has a presale estimate of $18,000 to $22,000. Salmon, who was an active maritime artist in both England and America, often sees his career divided into two periods. The first half where he was influenced by artists such as J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Luny, and the second period where he developed his luminous style, which had an impact on American art and many younger artists such as Fitz Hugh Lane. —
