Scottsdale Art Auction achieves the highest total in its history for the month of August

The two-day Summer Sale, hosted by Scottsdale Art Auction on August 21 to 22, reached an astounding $3.2 million in total sales, marking the highest August total in the auction house’s history.

E. Martin Hennings (1886-1956), Aspens. Oil, 20 x 24 in. Estimate: $50/75,000 SOLD: $84,000

Offering 507 lots in historic and contemporary Western, wildlife and sporting art, the success of the Summer Sale highlights the continued prominence and longevity of these genres. The auction also achieved a superb 99 percent sell-through rate.

Lively bidding took place for works by Western illustrator, artist and novelist Will James, featured from the distinguished A.P. Hays Collection of Western Art. Other major lots from historic artists include E. Martin Hennings’ Aspens (est. $50/75,000) at $84,000 and Joseph Henry Sharp’s Peonies and Irises, which broke past its $24,000 high estimate to sell for $27,000.

Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), Peonies and Irises. Oil, 24 x 29 in. Estimate: $18/24,000 SOLD: $27,000

Will James (1892-1942), Eventually. Graphite, 13¼ x 22½ in. Estimate: $10/15,000 SOLD: $51,000

“Our August auction as well as our April auction proved without a doubt that the market for classic and contemporary art is not just alive and well but absolutely thriving,” says Brad Richardson, co-owner of Scottsdale Art Auction. “Our August auction saw over 3,000 people bidding online across our three platforms, more than ever before. Additionally, we are continually seeing new and very active buyers on the market and sold works are being sent out  all over the country.” —
