Coeur d’Alene Art Auction’s main sale takes place every July in Reno, Nevada. High numbers—including $17 million in sales in July 2026—put wind in the auction house’s sails heading into its fall online event.

“The success of our July sale made it clear that collectors are hungry for the best of the best in Western Art,” says Mike Overby, auction partner. “Our November catalog builds off that momentum, with a lineup that speaks to serious buyers and newcomers alike.”

Leon Gaspard (1882-1964), Siberian Christmas, 1935. Oil on canvas laid on board, 24 x 24 in. Estimate: $250/350,000

Overby points to sales, museum exhibitions and even solo shows all around the market, noting that the Western art genre is strong. “We’re excited for this sale,” he says. “And even more excited because this is one of our better online sales.”

The next online auction will take place November 7 and feature more than 180 lots of Western and American art.

Birger Sandzén (1871-1954), Two Pines. Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

One of the early favorites in the sale is Leon Gaspard’s Siberian Christmas, a 1935 oil that is estimated at $250,000 to $350,000. Gaspard, who was born in Russia and painted there throughout his life, is primarily linked, at least for Western collectors, to Taos, New Mexico, where he lived and worked alongside many of the greats from the Taos Society of Artists. Gaspard is widely collected in Western circles, including his Russian paintings like Siberian Christmas, which resembles winter in Northern New Mexico.

“It’s the cover of the catalog and it’s just a tremendous Gaspard painting, one of his best. We sold this back in 2016, and it sold for $300,000 back then. We expect to sell it at that price or higher this year,” Overby says. “He was known for these foreboding forest scenes, and this is a quintessential example.”

Robert Abbett (1926-2015), Stonewall Brittany, 1990. Oil on board, 24 x 36 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Another outstanding example is Birger Sandzén’s Two Pines, an oil on canvas estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. “It has the best provenance a piece can have. It was painted in 1921 and a church group from Lindsborg, Kansas, purchased it from the artist to give to their pastor. They presented it to him as a gift and is has been passed down through his family ever since,” Overby says. “It’s a great story, and really magnificent piece.”

One artist represented with several works is Syndey Laurence, the great Alaska painter who devoted much of his career to capturing Mt. McKinley in paint. The sale will include Cabin, Mt. McKinley (est. $15/25,000) and Cache at Sunset (est. $15/25,000). Cache at Sunset is especially unique, with a strong composition around the cache structure built out of logs. The small, raised platform was meant to protect food and other items from bears and other creatures in the wilderness. “Of course, he’s known for Mt. McKinley, but this is a little different and quite nice,” Overby says.

Sydney Laurence (1865-1940), Cabin, Mt. McKinley. Oil on canvas, 20 x 15 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Other works in the sale include pieces by Charles M. Russell, Gerard Curtis Delano, William de la Montagne Cary, Frank Stick, Frank Hoffman, John Fery, Josh Elliott, Doug Hyde, Jill Carver, Susan Kliewer, Dan Mieduch and many others.

Although the sale is online, the auction house does offer previews by appointment at its office in Hayden, Idaho. —
