Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers will bring around 200 lots of quality American art to bidders on October 29 during its its annual Fall Fine Art Auction. Collectors can expect to find paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture in the following categories: Hudson River School landscapes, American impressionism, regionalist scenes, modernist paintings and more.
“Shannon’s has long specialized in historic American fine art and our sales are filled with top-quality paintings from this period,” says Sandra Germain, auction owner. “Our [collectors] are confident that when buying at Shannon’s we have taken the time to thoroughly research our offerings, review the condition and provide a transparent buying experience.”

In the still-life category, the sale is led by Severin Roesen’s (1815-1872) oil Still Life with Fruits, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. Originally sold by Shannon’s in 1999, this work has been in a private collection since. American impressionist works are led by a painting from Charles Courtney Curran (1861-1942), Picking Flowers, estimated at $25,000 to $35,000. “The figures, framed by a blossoming rhododendron, illustrate the artist’s expertise in painting both flowers and people,” says Germain. “The sunlit composition is a beautiful dual portrait of a mother and daughter in the garden.” Among the contemporary American impressionist offerings, there are three paintings of New York City subjects by Laurence A. Campbell (1939-2024).

A Thomas Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910) painting depicting a picnic scene on the banks of the Hudson River, will be offered at $20,000 to $30,000. “The painting dates to circa 1860 when the artist transitioned his European training into a distinctly American style,” Germain shares. “Whittredge expert Anthony Jansen, identified the scene as likely the Grand View just below South Nyack.” Additional 19th-century American art includes a group of works by Fidelia Bridges, that is prominently featured in the auction.
Modernist paintings will be represented as well, including a Henrietta Mary Shore (1880-1963) work titled Beach Flower. Germain notes that this abstract shell-like composition illustrates the influence of Georgia O’Keeffe. Estimated between $40,000 to $60,000, this work will likely attract interest from both private collectors and museums. Shore was a Canadian-born artist who spent most of her artistic career working in Los Angeles and New York.
