One of the top auction houses in New England—specializing in fine art, antiques, jewelry, rare artifacts and museum-quality objects—Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will hold its biggest sale of the sweltering season: the Summer Grandeur auction. Highlighting this year’s sale is a lush oil painting attributed to American impressionist Theodore Robinson. “In a scene constructed in warm greens, browns, and golds, it pictures a quiet moment between two young women in an orchard. The work carries provenance tying it to the important 19th-century collector William T. Evans,” the auction house notes. Painted around 1880, the piece is expected to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000.

Attributed to Theodore Robinson (1852-1896), Untitled, ca. 1880. Oil on canvas, unsigned, in magnificent hand carved gilt impressionist frame, edge lined, cleaned, craquelure. Old handwritten label verso reads: ‘D. Whiting, 29 W. 44th St’; inscribed on verso in red paint: ‘From William T. Evans Coll.’ Estimate: $20/30,000
The upcoming sale will also offer a number of other notable 19th-century American works, as well as the auction house’s typical array of rare antiques, Americana and nautical items. An opening preview will be held August 15 to 27. The live auction takes place August 28, 29 and 30, beginning at 11 a.m. each day at Thomaston Place’s showroom in Thomaston, Maine. —
