Swann’s auctions this past spring season have resulted in strong sell through rates. Overall, the artworks that are consistently preforming well are unique pieces that are coming to the secondary market for the first time or have been off the secondary market for over a decade or more. Collectors are always going to be seeking and purchasing, but what I have noticed over the past few auction seasons is that our buyers are being more selective and concentrating their spending efforts towards less lots per auction. In the world of editions, early-20th-century American woodcut engravings are seeing an uptick in attention among our collectors, including artists such as Rockwell Kent, Paul Landacre and Clarie Leighton. These striking images are often highly stylized and bold, due to the nature of the medium. Another area of print collecting that is preforming strongly are 20th-century European prints from small editions by master printmakers, such as Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso, which are uncommon to see circulating on the market. These rare prints tend to find pre-sale interest immediately from multiple serious collectors. Lastly, female artists producing material starting in the 1940s to current day are continuing to be highly sought after across our sales.
Collectors of abstract expressionism, continue to look at the under recognized female painters from this historic movement. Among them is Linda Lindeberg (1915-1973), who has had little representation on the secondary market. Lindeberg, like Franz Kline, Jack Tworkov and Rothko, was a student of Hans Hoffman. We were lucky to offer three works by her in our May 14 Modern & Post War auction, including two large scale oil paintings that set records for her work at auction.
