Initiatives in Art and Culture celebrates the 30th anniversary of the annual American Art Conference exploring the theme “Boundless Horizons.” The conference, firmly positioned at the forefront of critical inquiry into the field, begins the evening of May 13 and continues through May 15 in New York City at Heritage Auctions’ Park Avenue showroom. It coincides with other major art events happening in the city, including the American Art Fair, TEFAF and Frieze Art Fair.

Through wide-ranging insightful and informative talks, panels and conversations presented by leading scholars and authorities in the field, this year’s conference will revisit the notion of the “horizon” in the context of American cultural identity and American art, building on the inaugural conference’s 1996 theme, “Expanding Horizons.”

President and founder of Initiatives in Art and Culture, Lisa Koenigsberg explains, “Constantly invigorated by artists pushing against artificial divisions in form, subject matter and media, American art has transcended traditional tropes of pilgrims, cowboys and pioneers, and limits in inspiration and approach. Impatience with culturally or historically imposed constraints and artificial distinctions, has motivated American artists since before the nation’s founding. In pushing against these constraints, in understanding that our artistic horizons truly are boundless, American artists have articulated a powerful truth: that our art links us to our past, informs our present and points us toward a future that is ours to define.”

The conference will also examine how American art has pushed boundaries of geography in terms of subject matter and region-specific movements, and whether the United States as a whole should be considered part of a larger continental or hemispheric expression. The confines of “hierarchy of form” (fine art versus craft and other historically marginalized media) will also be challenged. Another avenue of exploration goes beyond the canvas to consider the frame and how it can express an artist’s intentions and affect our experience of the work.

Among the highlights in the robust schedule of programming is a discussion of N.C. Wyeth’s 1932 mural Apotheosis of the Family, led by Brandywine Museum of Art’s senior curator Amanda Burdan, that sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of Wyeth’s creative practice. In another standout talk, Larry List, author of Permanent Attraction: Man Ray & Chess: Dada & Surrealist Chess Art (2025), discusses “insider-outsider” artists Roger Anliker and Jack Damer, both of whom were formally trained but refused to participate in the commercial art world. And finally, Stanford University professor of art history emerita Wanda M. Corn presents “Rediscovering American Gothic,” a reexamination of Grant Wood’s iconic 1930 painting and its many interpretations in popular culture.

“The American Art Conference is the premier destination for anyone with an interest in the field,” says Lisa Koenigsberg. “Each year we convene the scholars, curators, collectors and artists making the biggest impact in the field today. Attendees can expect to come away with a deeper understanding of the current issues, debates and trends in the world of American art.”

Conference attendees will attend a private preview and reception for the American Art sale at Heritage Auctions and receive an invitation to the Gala Opening of the American Art Fair at the land-marked Bohemian National Hall.
