Slated for April 30 at 6 p.m., Shannon’s Spring Fine Art Auction will feature roughly 200 paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from the mid-19th century onward, with an emphasis on fresh-to-the-market quality American art. Shannon’s is actively accepting consignments through mid-March, but more than a month prior there were already plenty of significant lots among the sale’s offerings.

“As of now, we are very excited about the Mary Abbott, Yellow Diamond I, oil on canvas (est. $30/50,000),” shares Shannon’s owner Sandra Germain. “Like other female abstract expressionist artists, we have seen interest in her market soar in recent years. Works of this quality and size are rare and we are expecting a lot of interest.”

Louis Ritman (1889-1963), Summer Day. Oil On Canvas, 39½ x 39½ in. Estimate: $40/60,000

Other featured artists in the contemporary American art category include Jim Dine, Oscar Bluemner, Dale Chihuly, Wolf Kahn, Milton Avery, Louise Fishman, Anthony Thieme, Ernest Lawson, Richard Hayley Lever and Arthur B. Carles

Another major highlight is a rare marble bust by Harriet Goodhue Hosmer depicting tragic Renaissance figure Beatrice Cenci (est. $30/50,000). “Works by Hosmer are incredibly rare with less than 20 listed auction records,” says Germain, adding that Hosmer worked in Europe establishing a palatial studio with a staff of stonecutters. “She was incredibly successful in a male dominated field and is considered the first professional female sculptor. She eloquently resisted criticism from her male peers and had a thriving career with numerous commissions and projects.”

Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (1830-1908), Bust Of Beatrice Cenci. Marble, 28 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

Mary Abbott (1921-2019), Yellow Diamond I. Oil on canvas, 41 x 53½ in. Estimate $30/50,000

Also on the block is a double portrait of two women relaxing in the shade by Louis Ritman. Titled Summer Day (est. $40/60,000), the piece exemplifies Ritman’s signature impressionistic handling of figures in dappled light and shadow. Other American impressionists represented in the sale include Emile Gruppe, Aldro T. Hibbard, Edmund C. Tarbell and William Merritt Chase.

Works by Laurence A. Campbell will also be featured in the Spring Fine Art Auction, including his View Across 5th Avenue, 29th Street, a picture of American flags waving over a street scene, estimated to achieve $25,000 to $35,000. “Laurence A. Campbell studied and absorbed the American impressionist tradition of a previous generation of master artists like Guy C. Wiggins and then made it his own,” explains Germain. “We are particularly fond of his energetic New York City paintings like View Across 5th Avenue that capture the spirit of the city with patriotic American flags and bustling streets filled with pedestrians.”

Laurence A. Campbell (1939-2024), View Across 5th Avenue, 29th Street. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. Estimate: $25/35,000

Bidding will be available on Shannon’s website, through their mobile app, by telephone or by absentee. All of the works will be available for preview at their gallery in Milford, Connecticut, prior to the sale. —
