Images of American landscapes, including several from across the Atlantic Ocean, brought in high prices at Bonhams Skinners’ October 7 American art sale in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Landscape artists represented in the sale included Jasper Francis Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Arthur Clifton Goodwin, William Trost Richards, Emile Gruppe and others. The October sale realized $843,000 with an 81 percent sell-through rate.

The top lot was Albert Bierstadt’s An Alps Mountain Scene with Figures, a Cabin, and a Cow (est. $20/40,000) that sold for $48,640. Not far behind it was Guy Carleton Wiggins’ 1940 painting 5th Ave at 56th Street in Winter, which sold for $33,000, nearly doubling the $18,000 high estimate. Closing out the top three lots was Porfirio Salinas’ Texas painting Bluebonnet Meadowland (est. $20/40,000) that sold for $28,160.
