During a jam-packed week of American art sales, Christie’s will also present an auction dedicated to 19th-century American and Western-themed paintings and sculpture. Kicking off at 2 p.m. on January 23, 19th Century American and Western Art will feature 100 lots that span the Civil War-era through the turn-of-the-century, with a few examples of early 20th-century impressionism. The sale will lean more heavily toward traditional American art, including Hudson River School, genre paintings, still life and more, with about 20 percent in the Western category.

Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880), Sunset Over The Palisades on the Hudson, 1879. Oil on canvas, 18 x 34¼ in. Estimate: $1.2/1.8 million

Robert Scott Duncanson (1821-1872), Canadian Landscape. 1865. Oil on canvas, 30 x 50 in. Estimate: $200/300,000. All images courtesy CHRISTIE’S IMAGES LTD. 2025

“The sale brings the finest examples of historic American art to market from the best collections ever assembled,” says associate specialist and head of sale, Quincie Dixon. “This season we are thrilled to present Property of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, from the collection of Sandra Ferry Rockefeller.”

The Rockefeller collection includes the top lot of the sale, Sanford Gifford’s Sunset Over the Palisades on the Hudson, estimated to achieve between $1.2 and $1.8 million. “Gracing the cover of the 2003 catalog for the artist’s retrospective at the Met, the painting is a luminist masterpiece,” says Dixon, adding that this sale is also the ideal platform for significant rare works such as Robert S. Duncanson’s Canadian Landscape (est. $200/300,000) from the Collection of Robert and Faye Davidson. —
