Welcome to our annual Collector’s Guide to Auctions. As you will see in this special section, 2025 was an exciting and prosperous year for historic American art in the auction sector, and 2026 is shaping up to be even more so.
Auctions are a key factor in determining and shaping the state of the fine art market. They authenticate, project and establish the value of an artwork in real time. They provide a channel for the fluid exchange of art between private collections, estates, museums, galleries and independent buyers. They also bring a global community of sophisticated buyers and sellers together to participate in a bidding model that dates back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
In the following pages, you will hear from auction experts evaluating last year’s market, backed up with specific sales that support their assessment of what’s trending in the market right now and how other genres are faring. Heritage Auctions places their bets on illustration—having seen some jaw-dropping sales in the category over the past year. Western art is also going gangbusters; and the traditional historic American paintings and sculpture that we have built this publication around maintain steady demand and never seem to fall out of fashion.
As Aviva Lehmann, Heritage Auctions’ senior vice president of American Art, so aptly puts it, “In short, 2025 demonstrated that the American art market’s strength lies not in novelty, but in authenticity, heritage and an enduring emotional connection. As collectors and institutions continue to rediscover and redefine what ‘American art’ encompasses, the category’s future looks not only secure but full of possibility.”

Located in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, Grogan & Company is a high-end, full-service boutique auction house. The firm routinely achieves top prices at auction across all collecting categories of American artwork, and holds the record auction sales price for numerous New England artists.
These three works by John La Farge (1835-1910), offered in Grogan & Company’s Fall 2025 Fine Art Auction, demonstrate the firm’s strength in assisting families and collectors in selling significant works of art at auction. John La Farge traveled throughout the South Seas in 1890-91, documenting his travels in vivid watercolor, capturing the color and the atmosphere of the islands he visited. These three paintings were acquired by a Boston gentleman soon after La Farge returned from his South Seas expedition, and have descended within his family since that time. They were exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in the early 20th century, and otherwise remained unseen by La Farge scholars until this year, when the descendants of the Boston gentleman decided it was time for the paintings to be sold. By offering the paintings as a special section of their Fine Art Auction, and telling the story of the impressive works, Grogan & Company successfully honored the family’s stewardship of the paintings while maximizing their value at auction.

A consortium of leading American art dealers has organized a Western art auction to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona in the spring of each year. Under the banner Scottsdale Art Auction, dealers Mike Frost (Bartfield Galleries of New York City) and Brad Richardson (Legacy Galleries of Scottsdale, Arizona and Santa Fe, New Mexico) joined together and presented their first sale on April 2, 2005, at Richardson’s Legacy Gallery on Main Street in Scottsdale, Arizona. Frost has been instrumental in building significant public and private collections of historically important Western art throughout the country. Richardson’s two Legacy Gallery locations have become national leaders representing several members of the Cowboy Artists of America, National Academy of Western Art, and a number of exhibiting artists from the annual Prix de West in Oklahoma City and other major museums exhibitions around the country.
“Combining our various fields of expertise and taking advantage of our geographic diversity, we should be able to provide a valuable service to collectors and artists throughout the United States. Mike Frost is highly regarded for his knowledge of significant Western American masters. Art auctions are fundamental to the art market.” Richardson says. “They are the trading floor for the secondary market and, in most cases, help to establish collector confidence and set the market for an artist’s work…I have noted, over the past few years that premium works from major collections and artists’ studios have tended to gravitate to the auctions and we believe that we are ideally situated to serve that process.”
