Bonhams American art auction, taking place at the Manhattan showroom on November 18, will feature roughly 80 lots by renowned American artists from the 19th and early 20th century, as well as modernist works from the mid- to late-20th centuries.

An exciting recent addition to the sale is a watercolor by Winslow Homer titled Shipbuilding, Ipswich from 1873, with an estimated value of $80,000 to $120,000.

Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858-1924), Landscape with Figures, Summer House and Pavilion, ca. 1910-11. Watercolor and graphite on paper laid down on board, 15¼ x 22½ in., signed lower right: ‘Predergast’. Estimate: $250/50,000

With an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000, Maurice Prendergast’s Landscape with Figures, Summer House and Pavilion, is one of several leading lots with more to be announced as the auction nears.

Bonhams specialist and head of sale Aaron Anderson says, “This work is a fantastic example that exhibits Prendergast’s artistic concerns for pattern, rhythm and color over identifiable figure and form in the later part of his career and was executed at the height of his abilities working in the vein of the post-impressionists of Europe. Works by Prendergast from this period are still highly coveted by collectors.”

Max Weber (1881-1961), Three Tulips, 1907. Oil on canvas, 211/8 x 181/8 in., signed and dated upper left: ‘MAX WEBER 1907’; and (upper signed again lower right. Estimate: $80/120,000

Another highlight of the sale is a bronze sculpture by Elie Nadelman (1882-1946) modeled and cast around 1909. Created at the peak of Nadelman’s formative years in Paris, Standing Female Nude is considered a seminal work for the artist and demonstrates the influence of both classical sculpture and modernist inclinations. It is expected to achieve between $70,000 and $100,000.

Also of note is a watercolor seascape by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, The See-Gray and Silver (est. $80/120,000) from 1881. A wedding gift to his half-nephew Thomas Delano Whistler (1857-1921) and his new wife, Sophie Marguerite (née Ames), it is a personal piece that is accompanied by a trove of family photographs and documents.

Marsden Hartley (1877-1943), White Hibiscus, 1938. Oil on board, 16 x 12 in., signed on the reverse: ‘Hartley’. Estimate: $70/100,000

Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), Standing Female Nude, 1909. Bronze with dark brown patina, 16½ in., inscribed along the base: ‘ELI NADELMAN’; and with foundry mark ‘F. Costenoble Fondeur Paris’. Estimate: $70/100,000

Max Weber’s (1881-1961) still life Three Tulips was created during the artist’s time as a student in Paris, and speaks to the enduring influence Cezanne had on his work. Anderson adds, “Three Tulips was painted one year after Weber viewed the Salon d’Automn exhibition of 1906 that exhibited 10 of Cezanne’s most important works of his career. This exhibition not only directly influenced Weber, but greatly affected the artistic output of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.” The piece has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.

Also represented will be examples by N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth; a lovely still life by Marsden Hartley titled White Hibiscus painted in 1938 (est. $70/$100,000) and a portrait by Luigi Lucioni of the Mili Monti painting from 1941.

“We will have an exciting and unique array of material…that we expect to resonate with many collectors of traditional American art,” says Anderson. “We anticipate this coming November to be another exciting and busy time in the art market.” —
