The City That Doesn’t Sleep

Letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the May/June issue of American Fine Art Magazine! Well, we might as well call this the New York issue as there is an abundance of American historic art energy lighting up the Big Apple in May. You will see us at the shows—and the previews are waiting for you inside this issue.

Initiatives in Art and Culture starts things off on May 8 at Heritage Auctions’ New York headquarters. The 29th annual American Art Conference is bringing in leading experts from across the country to discuss this year’s theme, “Crafting the Dream.”  If you have not been to one of their symposiums it is simply the best educational experience for those interested in historic American art. It pinpoints monumental moments in historic art and the American artists that were a part of them. On May 10, the highly anticipated American Art Fair opens its doors at Bohemian National Hall with booths hosted by the most prestigious historic American art dealers and galleries in the country. It is an exclusive event for collectors and you should book your flights and hotels now because in the City That Never Sleeps, this fair is one of the best in the historic American art market.

Do not miss the Sargent and Paris exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May. On view through August 3, the show explores the early career of the iconic American painter, from his arrival in Paris in 1874 as a precocious 18-year-old art student through the mid-1880s, when his infamous portrait Madame X was a scandalous success at the Paris Salon. His controversial Madame X will be on view, joined by other well-known portraits and more obscure works as well, that provide insight into the challenges and triumphs of one of America’s greatest historic artists. Turn to Page 36 to read the full story and enjoy our New York issue!
