Nearly 200 lots of historic American artwork will hit the auction block this spring during Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneer’s yearly Fine Art Auction, offering collectors a variety of exceptional examples ranging from 1850 to present day. A massive range in price points—from $3,000 to $150,000—also ensures that every level of collector has the chance to acquire a new piece of art.

Two major highlights in the upcoming sale are examples from the Ashcan School: Robert Henri’s 1915 portrait of a jovial young girl, titled Patience (Laughing Youngster), and George Wesley Bellows’ 1919 landscape Old Orchard, Newport, Rhode Island.

Robert Henri (1865-1929), Patience (Laughing Youngster), 1915. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in., signed. Estimate: $80/120,000

“As a leader of the Ashcan School, [Henri] was celebrated for his vivid portraits of unique sitters and was an influential early 20th-century art teacher, shaping the movement’s focus on urban life and the working class,” says Shannon’s owner Sandra Germain. The portrait, she adds, exemplifies urban realism. It’s expected to fetch between $80,000 and $120,000.

“Old Orchard, Newport, Rhode Island is a striking oil on canvas that captures the rugged beauty of the New England landscape,” Germain says of the Bellows piece. “The painting, measuring 22 by 28 inches, is characterized by its bold, expressive brushstrokes and dynamic use of color. Bellows’ signature style is evident in the dramatic sky, vibrant greens, and the sense of movement in the trees and grass.” The pastoral scene, featuring a dark horse grazing in the foreground, has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.

George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925), Old Orchard, Newport, Rhode Island, 1919. Oil on canvas, 22 x 28 in., signed. Estimate: $60/80,000

Henry Roderick Newman (1843-1917), View of Florence, 1877. Oil on canvas, 26 x 36 in., signed and dated. Estimate: $40/60,000

“Another exciting offering is a very rare oil on canvas by Henry Roderick Newman,” Germain says of Newman’s View of Florence, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000. “Measuring 26 by 36 inches, the work exemplifies Newman’s precise attention to detail and luminous use of color. The composition offers a serene perspective of the iconic city of Florence, likely inspired by his extensive travels and admiration for Italian landscapes. Signed and dated at the lower right center, ‘H R Newman 1877,’ the painting was notably exhibited at the National Academy of Design Annual Exhibition in New York that same year.” While Newman has had more than 200 paintings go to auction, this is the artist’s first oil to hit the auction block.

Laurence A. Campbell (1939-2024), The City in Winter (5th Avenue New York). Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 in., signed. Estimate: $40/60,000

The Spring Fine Art Auction takes place Thursday, May 8, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time, with a public preview from April 28 to May 7. Bidding is available live, by telephone, and online at www.shannons.com. —
