For the forthcoming California & American Fine Art sale, hosted by John Moran Auctioneers, collectors can expect to find approximately 200 lots that highlight people, places and landscapes. This includes paintings, works on paper and sculptures by top artists of significant artistic movements of the 19th and early 20th century.
“Our upcoming sale includes four major fresh-to-market collections amassed decades ago featuring exceptional examples of works by Edgar Payne, Julian Rix, Maurice Braun, Joseph Raphael and others, as well as newly rediscovered estate pieces by artists including N.C. Wyeth,” says Katherine Halligan, director of fine art at John Moran Auctioneers. “We are excited to bring these works to public auction for the first time, or in decades, and expect to see a robust group of bidders, new and seasoned, to participate in the sale.”

Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945), Rose of Torridge, ca. 1920. Oil on canvas, 40½ x 30 in. Estimate: $100/200,000
Halligan notes that important artworks stem from historic and contemporary California plein air, American impressionism, 19th-century academic and Barbizon schools, illustration and other important 20th-century American artistic movements.
One of the leading lots of the sale, is a quaint scene by N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), Rose of Torridge, circa 1920. “Wyeth stands as one of the titans of turn-of-the-century American illustration and was a prolific practitioner,” Halligan shares. “[This particular painting] was used as an illustration for the book Westward Ho! by Charles Kingsley in the 1920 Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York publication. This delightful view depicts a young girl, the central adventure-seeking character Amyas Leigh’s English love interest, Rose Salterne, holding her admirer’s letter and sniffing an eponymous rose as she gazes out from her cottage window lost in thought.” The painting comes from a San Diego County estate, and is expected to fetch between $100,000 and 200,000.

Armin Carl Hansen (1886-1957), The Belated Boat. Oil on board, 28 x 33 in. Estimate: $60/80,000

Edgar Alwin Payne (1883-1947), The Orange Sail, Concarneau, France. Oil on canvas, 29 x 29 in. Estimate: $30/50,000
Another incredible example is the oil on canvas The Orange Sail, Concarneau, France (est. $30/50,000) by Edgar Alwin Payne (1883-1947). “One of the most celebrated subjects for [this] California plein air master, were depictions of colorful red sails on boats in France and Italy. As an impressionist painter concerned with capturing light, the clear waters, red sails and Mediterranean marine and building architecture provided ample inspiration, and the artist made multiple journeys to Europe during his career, including an extended trip from 1922 to 24. This view of the boat-filled harbor of Concarneau, France, is a particularly strong composition for the subject, painted in this prime 1920s period.” The piece is from the esteemed personal collection of Robert A. Day Jr., Los Angeles, California.

Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), The Alps from Visp (Switzerland). Oil on paper laid to board, 14 x 19. Estimate: $25/35,000
John Moran will also feature four additional paintings by Payne, including other views of red-sail boats.
Additional highlights to watch for include Albert Bierstadt’s (1830-1902) stunning landscape scene The Alps from Visp (Switzerland) (est. $25/35,000); Percy Gray’s(1869-1952) equally impressive landscape Tree and Wildflowers ($20/30,000); and Armin Carl Hansen’s (1886-1957) moody oil on board, The Belated Boat, with a high estimate of $80,000.
