A Decorative Arts Revival

letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the March/April issue of American Fine Art Magazine! We are very excited to bring you our very special Collector’s Focus on Decorative Arts & Antiques. We hear from readers across the nation that the collectibility of American decorative art and antiques is on the rise in both sales and accessibility. Premier auction houses are acquiring and bringing us more decorative pieces and we are seeing a revival of interest in collectors of all ages. Collectors and historians are resonating with and connecting to our American craftsman forefathers. Beginning on Page 46 you can further develop your knowledge base and appreciation for this quintessentially American genre.

American Fine Art Magazine is a major media sponsor of the Philadelphia Show, one of the top fine art and antiques shows of the year. It returns to the East Terrace of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) April 24 through April 27. I have attended the Philadelphia Show and the art, antiques and the grand setting make it a truly memorable experience.

On Page 50, Alexandra Kirtley, PMA’s curator of American decorative arts, discusses the museum’s collection and what these historical artifacts can tell us about our past and their continued relevance today. Kirtley’s knowledge of Americana is extensive and her passion for this aspect of fine art is both revelatory and contagious. If you have not been to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it should go on your list immediately and April is a perfect time to plan your trip! Located in the birthplace our of Independence, it is amazing to be able to trace our country’s history in the museum’s extensive early American galleries.

This is a very full issue. Museum exhibitions, gallery shows and major auctions—and perhaps the next historic work to add to your collection—await you in the following pages. Enjoy!

Best Regards,
