Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers’ online sale of modestly priced fine art achieved a total of $162,500 in sales across 106 lots with an 80 percent sell-through rate. Several historical American paintings led the auction including a large Hermann Fuechsel, titled On the Lake, that sold for $7,150. The painting descended from a family collection in Lake George and was fresh to the market. An Alexander Wyant, titled Valley Scene, doubled its estimate when it sold for $6,350. In addition, American tonalist paintings by Bruce Crane sold well during the online auction. A small, 12-by-20-inch winter scene brought in $7,800 and an autumn scene by the artist sold for $4,875. Other original artworks in the sale included Connecticut impressionists William Chadwick, Henry Ward Ranger and Lawrence Mazzanovich.

Artists of the WPA
On January 30 Swann Auction Galleries held its Artists of the WPA sale, featuring paintings, prints, photographs, posters, books and related material by artists whose careers were sustained by the Works Progress Administration between 1935 and 1943.
The top lot in the sale was a 1957 oil on canvas titled Pink Horses by Lawrence Lebduska, depicting a herd of horses in a pasture. The painting more than doubled its $7,000 high estimate when it sold for $15,000. Other high performing lots include Yvonne Twining Humber’s city scene 40 South Rutland Street, Boston, which sold for $13,750 against an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000; and Reginald Marsh’s 1941 watercolor and ink Figures at Coney Island Beach, which bested its $5,000 high estimate when it sold for $8,750.

The Old West Auction, which took place in Las Vegas on January 24, brought in $1.9 million in sales. Held in conjunction with Old West Events and Morphy Auctions, the sale offered collectors a wide variety of Western and Native American artwork, as well as firearms and cowboy artifacts.
W.H.D. Koerner’s oil on canvas Jubilo Where Did You Sleep Last Night was one of the top paintings, selling for $19,200. The early-20th-century piece features a group of cowboys and townsfolk having a discussion. Another major seller in the auction was an exceptional “Machris” parade saddle by Edward H. Bohlin, which sold for $233,700 against a presale estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. —
