On October 24, Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers will bring major American works, many fresh to the market, to bidders during a sale in Milford, Connecticut. More than 200 lots will be available, including works from popular categories such as Pennsylvania Impressionism, Hudson River School, female artists and sculpture.
Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908), Morning at Narragansett — The Turn of the Tide, 1871. Oil on canvas, 20½ x 41 in., signed and dated. Estimate: $150/200,000
One of the works that is already generating interest among collectors is Alfred Thompson Bricher’s 1871 oil Morning at Narragansett — The Turn of the Tide, estimated at $150,000 to $200,000. “This is a masterpiece by the artist,” says Sandra Germain, Shannon’s managing partner. “It was painted in 1871, a prime period for Bricher. The composition is a luminist work of Narragansett, with all of the elements of the day, the family activities, the translucent water, the sailboat and the iconic rock. It is an A-plus example of the artist’s work.”
Ernest Lawson (1873-1939), Boat House, Winter, Harlem River, 1918. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in., signed and dated. Estimate: $100/150,000
Elsewhere in the sale is Frederick Carl Frieseke’s 1915 oil The Rose Gown, which is estimated at $80,000 to $120,000. Frieseke has had some exceptional pieces come to market in recent years, and they routinely are driven high by competitive bidders. “We have had great success with Frieseke’s works in the recent past,” notes Germain. “We sold Lady Trying on a Hat, 1909, in October 2023 for $450,000 and a smaller painting, Dressing in May, for $112,500. We expect to have great success with The Rose Gown.”
Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939), The Rose Gown, 1915. Oil on canvas, 32 x 32 in., signed. Estimate: $80/120,000
The sale will also include Ernest Lawson’s 1918 oil Boat House, Winter, Harlem River (est. $100/150,000) and Emily Mason’s 1988 oil Three Musicians (est. $40/60,000). Germain says the Lawson was done in the prime of the artist’s career and features appealing subject matter, so she expects interest to be high for the painting.
Emily Mason (1932-2019), Three Musicians, 1988. Oil on canvas, 50 x 48 in., signed. Estimate: $40/60,000
Other works in the sale include a Newport Beach scene by Worthington Whittredge, and two large oils and three works on paper, also by Mason, “whose brightly colored abstract works are gaining notoriety in the market,” Germain adds.
