Buyers this year appear to be very selective, with many on the lookout for specific artists and styles to help fill out their collections. Clients seem a little less open to things that are not on their “wish list.” As always, both private individuals and institutions are looking for pictures that are well crafted, in fine condition and with good provenance.

Our year kicked off with strong sales of precisionist works from our Charles Goeller solo exhibition, as well as works by Edmund Lewandowski. Our clients have also been particularly enthusiastic about women artists. Over half of our sales since the beginning of the year have been by women painters. Good examples of regionalism, social realism and even still life have done well for us this year. Above all, buyers have been attracted recently to surrealism, post-surrealism and magical realism, with Helen Lundeberg leading the way.

We are excited about a handful of women artists that we feel are ripe for rediscovery, including Marina Stern, who was a multi-faceted painter who started as an expressionist before moving into Pop Art and neo immaculate paintings during the 1960s through the 1970s. Stern was adept at combining precisionism with surrealist and Pop Art aesthetics. Although her works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the National Portrait Gallery, it has been almost two decades since her last solo exhibition. We are honored to represent her estate and are planning a major solo exhibition in 2025 in addition to featuring her as part of our ongoing presentation of The Neo Immaculates.
