Shannon’s fall Fine Art Auction is shaping up to be an exciting sale, with consigned works by Eric Sloane, Blanche Lazzell, Priscilla Roberts, Samuel Colman, Rockstraw Downes, Charles Courtney Curran and others already confirmed, and new lots being added to the roster regularly.
Jane Peterson (1876-1965), Venice. Oil on board, 18¾ x 18¾ in., signed lower center: ‘Jane Peterson’. Estimate: $15/25,000
Roughly 200 paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture are expected to be featured in the October 24 sale, with historical American art figuring prominently.
From 1870, a seascape by Francis A. Silva, Cape Ann, depicts the waves crashing against the rocky shoreline, with soft pastel hues characteristic of the artist’s Luminist style. Measuring 20 by 40 inches and with a provenance that stretches across the last century, the piece is expected to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000.
Another 19th-century highlight is a rare winter landscape by Albert Bierstadt of a single tree against a mountainous landscape. The small-scale oil has a high estimate of $15,000.
Richard Hayley Lever (1876-1958), High Bridge Over Harlem River, ca. 1913. Oil on canvas, 50 x 60 in., signed lower right: ‘Hayley Lever’. Estimate: $30/50,000
From the early 20th century, a Venice painting by the increasingly sought-after artist Jane Peterson is expected to generate attention. The scene, depicting row boats approaching the Venetian facades lining the banks of a canal is painted in Peterson’s distinct colorful palette and soft, dynamic brushwork, is expected to garner at least $15,000.
Richard Hayley Lever’s 1913 High Bridge Over Harlem River is a massive 50-by-60-inch canvas in a custom, gold-leaf, Lowy frame. Like the Bierstadt, the winter scene also demonstrates the artist’s skillful rendering of snow, a notoriously challenging subject.
Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Winter Landscape. Oil on paper mounted on board, 6¾ x 8¼ in., monogrammed lower right: ‘AB’. Estimate: $10/15,000
“Our goal is to educate our clients and provide opportunities for them to grow their collections with quality works from the 19th century through the present,” says Shannon’s owner Sandra Germain. “The best part about building an auction is learning from each consignment. Each unique artwork provides a different perspective and we enjoy sharing that with our audience. After the success of our spring auction, we are anticipating a sale full of fresh-to-the-market quality paintings that will excite our existing clients and attract new collectors to Shannon’s.”
Francis Augustus Silva (1835-1886), Cape Ann, 1870. Oil on canvas, 20¾ x 40 in., signed and dated lower left: ‘F.A. Silva. / 1870’. Estimate: $20/30,000
