From October 4 through 18, Christie’s will present American Atmosphere: An Important Private Collection, an online-only auction featuring significant and diverse works spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. With a distinct emphasis on the inspiring effect of light and atmosphere in American art history, the collection includes stunning examples of American impressionism, including works by Louis Ritman, Childe Hassam, Theodore Butler and Willard Leroy Metcalf; while the 19th century is strongly represented by notable paintings by leading artists like William Bradford and Edward Moran. Headlining the sale is Ritman’s Hollyhocks, a prime example of the artist’s intimate and richly painted garden scenes, inspired by the work of French impressionist master Claude Monet.
