Market Report

What we’re hearing from galleries and auction houses across the country.

Georgina Winthrop
President and Fine Art Director Grogan & Company

The market is selective but strong. There is a new generation of homeowners and collectors buying for themselves at auction. These buyers are tech savvy, and judicious in what they bid aggressively for. They are comfortable buying works sight unseen, and are more likely to bid via our live stream than in person. Broadly speaking, this new generation is drawn to artists whose secondary markets are still developing, and to works that are “statement pieces” —either in scale, color or composition.

Although we have seen a softening in demand for the more traditional collecting genres, the demand for modern and contemporary works is very strong. Within this category, we see particular strength in the market for 20th and 21st-century works by women artists. In the past year, works by Judy McKie, Joan Snyder, Alma Thomas and Alice Baber have led our sales, selling for far above their estimated ranges. Additionally, we see a robust demand for contemporary New England artists including Anne Packard, Ben Aronson and Kib Bramhall.

For fans of John Singer Sargent or Walter Gay, I recommend exploring the work of Phoebe Dickinson, a contemporary British portraitist. The mastery of light in her interior oils is unparalleled. Closer to home, I recommend a deep dive into Judy McKie. Across mediums, her sculptural furniture is fascinating.
