On July 2, Heritage Auctions will present the online-only American Art Within Reach Showcase Auction, which will feature American artworks at lower estimates that should appeal to all kinds of collectors.

Aldro Hibbard (1886-1972), Snowy Landscape and Stream. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in., signed lower right: ‘A.T. Hibbard’. Estimate: $6/8,000

“These are pieces that are generally going to be under $3,000. We care about helping people build collections, and not everyone can enter the market at that high level of our regular American art sales,” says Aviva Lehmann, Heritage’s senior vice president in the American art department. “These online sales are a great place for collectors to get their feet wet within the arena of fine art.”

Mario J. Korbel (1882-1954), The Kiss. Patinated bronze, 12 x 83⁄8 x 73⁄8 in., inscribed to base: ‘MARIO KORBEL’ and ‘ROMAN BRONZE WORKS, N.Y.’ Estimate: $2/3,000

The online component adds to the accessibility of the sale, Lehmann says. “About 10 years ago, we watched as an Edward Hopper sold sight unseen for $10 million online. I knew we were in a new era,” she says. “Today it’s easier than ever to view and purchase art online. We show you frames, offer condition reports, upload [high-quality] images…we want to give everyone the tools they need to bid comfortably.”

The live, online-only sale will feature about 100 lots. Bidding opens June 11, with the live sale concluding the bidding session on July 2. A number of works in the sale will come from the Ruth Sylvia Nelkin Collection out of Stamford, Connecticut. Plein air painter Aldro Hibbard will have two works in the sale, both from the Nelkin Collection: Snowy Landscape and Stream (est. $6/8,000) and Snowy Landscape and Mountain (est. $4/6,000). Another work from the Nelkin Collection is William Lester Stevens’ October in Conway, estimated at $2,500 to $3,500.

William Lester Stevens (1888-1969), October in Conway. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in., signed and inscribed lower right: ‘William Stevens N.A.’; titled and inscribed on the reverse: ‘#204 / October in Conway’. Estimate: $2,500/3,500

Elsewhere in the sale will be the final lots from a large private collection known as Property from the Collection of a Distinguished Academic Woman. That selection will include two Marguerite Stuber Pearson paintings: The Blue Danube (est. $5/7,000) and The Music Room (est. $3/5,000).

Marguerite Stuber Pearson (1898-1978), The Music Room. Oil on canvas, 30 x 36 in., signed lower right: ‘Marguerite S. Pearson’. Estimate: $3/5,000

In the sculpture category, two works by Mario J. Korbel will be available. The first is The Kiss, estimated at $2,000 to $3,000, and then also an untitled work from 1915, estimated at $1,500 to $2,500.

Finally, two works by Margaret Keane will be up for bidders. Keane was the star subject of Tim Burton’s 2014 film Big Eyes.
