Marine Sale

This August 8 and 9, Eldred’s Auction Gallery will be hosting its Marine Sale, one of the only dedicated auctions of marine art in North America. The sale takes place at the auction house’s headquarters in a historic sea captain’s house in East Dennis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. A major piece in the upcoming sale is Fisherman at Sunset off White Island Light by William R. Davis. The oil on canvas, which captures a series of sailboats on calm waters against a warm sunset, has a presale estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.

Other notable lots include a pair of scrimshaw whale’s teeth by Manuel Enos, a rare cased half hull model of a sailing vessel, a Chinese School view of Whampoa and works by leading historic and contemporary marine artists like Thomas Maclay Hoyne, Fred Pansing, Timothy Thompson and William Pierce Stubbs. All lots will be available to preview during a public exhibition the day prior to the auction or by appointment.

Summer Sale

Eldred Auction Galley’s annual Summer Sale will feature a curated selection of important works by historic and contemporary American artists, including Albert Bierstadt, Jamie Wyeth, Childe Hassam and William Matthew Prior. 

Lots to look out for include John White Allen Scott’s marine scene View of Eastern Point Lighthouse from Stage Fort, Gloucester, Massachusetts, estimated to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000. Another piece expected to garner attention is a bronze by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth titled The Fisherman (sundial), also estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. Frishmuth is considered a “master of lyrical sculpture,” according to the auction house. Antique furniture, Americana, sporting art, Oriental rugs and material from other collecting categories will also be included in the Summer Sale, which takes place at Eldred’s headquarters on Cape Cod. The live auction will offer in-person, online, phone and absentee bidding.

Summer Grandeur

Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Summer Grandeur auction will showcase American art and furniture, featuring everything from finely painted decorative objects to iconic advertising of American-made products. 

A few pieces by Andy Warhol will be also be on offer, including a limited artist’s proof of his work Mammy from his Myths Series, which has a presale estimate of $25,000 to $30,000. Warhol, who intersected his passion with art and fascination of American production, will be featured alongside other artists such as William Thon, Robert Indiana and Charmion Von Wiegand; and contrasted by the traditional stylings of artists such as Andrew Winter, Elisha Taylor Baker and Jamie Wyeth. 

The auction will begin each morning at 11 a.m. EST each day with live, phone, absentee and online bidding offered. The opportunity for an in-person preview will begin August at the gallery.
