Women in the Lead

Post-war and contemporary sale at Freeman’s | Hindman generates $2.9 million in sales

On April 24, Freeman’s | Hindman presented its Post-War and Contemporary sale in Chicago. The auction realized $2.9 million in sales. The bigger highlight, though, was the result for many of the works by women artists. The sale sold seven works for more than $100,000, four of them by women, including the top lot, Pat Steir’s modern piece Small Ghost Waterfall, 1993 (est. $250/350,000), which sold for $533,000.

Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), Giraffe and Moon with Volcano (Giraffe and Volcano #2), 1951. Oil on Masonite, 5 x 7 in., signed and dated. Estimate: $50/70,000 SOLD: $266,700

On the historic side of the sale, women dominated there as well, with Gertrude Abercombie’s Giraffe and Moon with Volcano selling for $266,000, nearly four times over its high estimate of $70,000, and Louise Nevelson’s untitled wood assemblage realizing $177,000, within its estimates of $150,000 to $250,000.

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988), Untitled, ca. 1973-78. Black painted wood, 80 x 48 x 5¼ in. Estimate: $150/250,000 SOLD: $177,800

Other historic material that sold high in the sale included Michael Goldberg’s Sad Street, which sold within estimates for $114,000; Larry Poons’ Untitled (15-A) sold for $82,000, just over its high estimate of $70,000; Edward Clark’s Standing Woman at the Chair sold within estimates for $63,000; and Lynn Drexler’s Trunk Grass sold for $54,000, nearly double the high estimate of $30,000.
