While Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers has a lot of excitement surrounding its live Fine Art Auction on May 2, auction specialist Ali Danker mentions that Shannon’s Online Fine Art Auction is also just as enticing. The sale will feature roughly 200 lots of quality paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture, with Danker adding that the online sales at Shannon’s “are an excellent opportunity to acquire original artworks at all price levels.”
Danker notes there is particular excitement building for women artists and women modernists, starting in the spring live auction. “We plan to carry that momentum into the online sale with works by Fidelia Bridges and Marion Ranyak,” says Danker. “We have seen that quality artworks at the right price, continue to sell well. We have worked hard with our consignors to negotiate the best estimate and offer quality paintings to our buyers at prices consistent with the market.”

Estimate: $2/3,000One of the favored artists in the sale, Fidelia Bridges (1835-1923), holds a high auction record at Shannon’s. “Bridges enjoyed a long and successful career as a painter of meticulous depictions of the natural world, particularly of birds and flowers,” Danker says. “One of her favorite sites was along the banks of the Housatonic River in nearby Stratford, Connecticut.”
Bridges watercolor piece Birds by the Seashore, originally purchased at the New York City gallery Hirschl and Adler in 1985, is a strong example of the artist’s expertise in depiciting wildlife, along with flora and fauna, and is therefore set at a higher estimate for this sale—between $2,000 and $3,000.

Another impressive lot in the online sale is William Lester Stevens’s (1888-1969) oil painting Autumn Brook. Danker shares that “Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, [where most of his landscape scenery is inspired by], and was instrumental in organizing the Rockport Art Association in 1921.” The painting is estimated at $2,000 to $3,000.
While Shannon’s is still acquiring lots at the writing of this article, Danker adds that “there are always hidden treasures in our online auctions. Sometimes it is a work on paper or drawing by listed artist or an oil painting that has been in private hands for decades. It is always worth taking a look!”
