Santa Fe Art Auction will be holding its two-day Art of the West sale this May 8 and 9, offering an excellent selection of Western and Native American paintings and sculpture. While the sale will feature a number of living artists, historic art is a major player with numerous lots coming from such 20th-century artists as William Zorach, Fritz Scholder, Ben Turner, Lon Megargee, A.D. Greer, Laurence Philip Sisson and more.
Ben Turner (1912-1966), Sierra Blanca - Ruidoso, NM. Oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in. Estimate: $2/4,000
Among some of the top lots in historic sculpture are Scholder’s 1991 bronze Another Dream Horse, which is expected to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000, as well as Reclining Nude, a piece carved from stone by Zorach, with a presale estimate of $2,500 to $5,000. Collectors should also be on the lookout for a fantastic collection of animal art from the Virginia Museum of Animal Art, which features examples of contemporary sculpture from artists like Scholder and R.C. Gorman (dubbed “the Picasso of American Indian artists” by The New York Times). The proceeds from approximately 100 works from the Gene Worrell Collection of Animal Art will benefit funding for an expansion project at the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia, where the collection will soon be housed in a new dedicated wing.
A.D. Greer (1904-1998), New Mexico Landscape. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. Estimate: $1.8/2,400
Fritz Scholder (1937-2005), Another Dream Horse, 1991. Bronze, ed. 16 of 16, 19½ x 23 x 9 in. Estimate: $4/6,000
“Santa Fe Art Auction’s Art of the West sale…marks the beginning of high season for the Southwest house,” says president and CEO Gillian Blitch. “[Western works in the sale] celebrate the region’s rich heritage and express all that makes the West wild, rugged and markedly collectable,” she says. Native American lots in the upcoming sale include fine pieces of vintage jewelry, pottery and classic Navajo Rugs.
William Zorach (1887-1966), Reclining Nude. Carved stone, 7 x 85/8 x 4 in. Estimate: $2.5/5,000
Additional historic lots to be on the lookout for include Turner’s alpine scene Sierra Blanca - Ruidoso, NM (est. $2/4,000); Sisson’s desert townscape On the Road to Ojo Caliente (est. $2/4,000); and New Mexico Landscape, a lush landscape by Greer estimated at $1,800 to $2,400.
