Grogan & Co. will hold its annual spring Fine Art Auction on May 4, featuring an impressive selection of over 175 lots. One of the major highlights in the upcoming sale that is garnering attention is a William Trost Richards painting of Mt. Desert Island, previously in the collection of David Rockefeller. Other top lots include oils by Grandma Moses, Frank Swift Chase and Hunt Slonem, as well as prints by Helen Frankenthaler and Ansel Adams. A collection of folk portraits by Ruth Henshaw Miles Bascom rounds out the wide variety of genres, time periods and mediums offered in the sale. The auction takes place at Grogan & Co.’s Beacon Hill gallery in Boston, Massachusetts, with bidders participating both in-person and through livestream. An auction exhibition will be held from April 29 to May 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

American Panorama
A wide range of historic American and Southern paintings will be on offer during Brunk Auctions’ American Panorama sale. An important collection of Western and Native American art will be available for bidding as well. Among the Western paintings are an important Nashville collection featuring views of Yosemite by Thomas Hill, William Keith, Hermann Herzog, Enoch Wood Perry and many others. The auction also includes an important history painting by German-American artist Emanuel Leutze titled Two O’clock and No Water (est. $80/120,000), a stunning landscape by William Trost Richards titled Valley in the Adirondacks (est. $44/60,000), a classic blue bonnet hillside piece by Julian Onderdonk and an East Hampton landscape by Thomas Moran. Brian Lebel’s Old West Show & Auction returns to New Mexico for its 34th year. The sale will feature some of the best contemporary and historic Western artists, led by James Walker’s masterwork Judges of the Plains. The piece has an estimate of $400,000 to $500,000. Summer Splendor
Thomaston Place Auction Galleries is hosting its first three-day auction of the summer with the 2024 Summer Splendor auction. Taking place June 28 to 30, the sale features an array of classical sculpture, paintings, etchings and more from notable estates across the country.
Collectors should be on the lookout for a bronze from 1908 by Bessie Potter Vonnoh. Titled The Dancer, the sculpture depicts a young woman gracefully lifting her dress, her outstretched foot clearly denoting that she is about to participate in a dance. Vonnoh has achieved a masterful depiction of the movement of the human form, from the careful arch of the woman’s back to the folds of her skirt.
The upcoming June Summer Splendor auction begins at 11 a.m. Eastern Time each day. Thomaston’s next summer auction will be held August 23 to 25.
