Women in the Arts
This March, Eldred’s holds its third annual Women in the Arts sale showcasing 19th- and 20th-century women artists often overlooked and underrepresented in the art world. The 2024 sale will have about 150 works on offer, including several historic Provincetown School examples. Collectors will find a number of by local artists with national reputations as well as traditional 19th-century landscapes and mid-century abstract art.
A major highlight in the sale is Chicago artist Pauline Lennards Palmer’s oil Village scene, Provincetown, Massachusetts, estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.
A portion of proceeds from the auction will go toward WE CAN, a women’s empowerment organization on Cape Cod, where Eldred’s Auction Gallery is based.

Swann Auction Galleries hosts its 19th & 20th Century Art auction on March 14. The sale includes an array of fine art that bridges the seasons and centuries alike. Heritage Auctions is introducing a new auction category for collectors to acquire great works of American art at accessible price points. American Art Within Reach is a new midseason sale taking place online twice a year, featuring works by a variety of American masters estimated under $10,000.
This auction provides a unique opportunity to own a piece of cultural heritage without breaking the bank, and includes American paintings, drawings and sculpture from the early 19th century to today. This selection of works, which features such noteworthy names as Wolf Kahn and Guy Pène Du Bois, has been carefully curated from a broad range of styles and time periods to appeal to both the seasoned collector and the budding art aficionado. Nearly 200 works of fine art will be offered during Eldred’s Spring Sale, spread across two sessions from April 4 to 5. Paintings will include a superb selection of North Shore, Fall River and White Mountain School works, as well as early American, contemporary and Cape Cod/Provincetown examples.
A highlight to lookout for is an oil on Masonite by Benjamin Kimberly Prins titled March Winds. The piece, estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, was the cover illustration for the March 1966 issue of Reader’s Digest. Prins is known for illustration art, and his works appeared in several well-known magazines throughout the 20th century, the auction house notes.
