Eldred’s Fall Sale took place this past November 16 and 17 to enthusiastic bidding. In total, the annual auction brought in $1.49 million across the two-day sale, which took place on Cape Cod at Eldred’s headquarters. Among the nearly 200 lots were a number of successful highlights in 19th- and 20th-century fine art.
Lemuel D. Eldred (1848-1921), Twilight over the Camden Hills, Rockport, Maine. Oil on canvas, 9 x 14 in., 16½ x 21½ in. (framed), signed and dated lower right: ‘L.D. Eldred 1876’. Estimate: $12/18,000 SOLD: $32,760
An oil on canvas by Lemuel D. Eldred titled Twilight over the Camden Hills, Rockport, Maine bested its $18,000 high estimate when it sold for $32,760. The stunning piece—which features sailboats resting on still waters bathed in warm, glowing light—was purchased by an online buyer and came from an important Connecticut collection.
Another top lot was the oil on panel Tabletop still life of autumnal fruits, an unsigned 19th-century American School work, artist unknown. Featuring an elaborate fruit spread across a white tablecloth, the piece fetched $22,680, an astonishing 22 times higher than its $1,000 estimate. Although at least three phone bidders were on the lot and a few bidding in the audience, it ultimately sold to a private collector online, Eldred’s notes. The painting came from the personal Collection of Bob and Nancy Skinner, who founded Skinner, Inc. auction house. “It’s a wonderful piece,” says Eldred’s president Josh Eldred. “It was fresh to market material, and the Skinner provenance was a [big] draw.”
