Hindman held the spring edition of its American art auction on May 19, with stellar results. In total, the sale achieved just over $1 million, with a 90 percent sell-through rate. Among the highlights of the May sale were works by such esteemed names in American art as Gertrude Abercrombie, Milton Avery and Fern Isabel Coppedge.

Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), Giraffe and Moon, 1956. Oil on Masonite, 4¼ x 5¼ in., signed: ‘Abercrombie’ and dated lower right. Estimate: $50/70,000 SOLD: $182,700

Milton Avery (1885-1965), Mountain Lake, 1947. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 in., signed: ‘Milton Avery’ and dated lower left; signed, dated, titled and inscribed on verso: ‘24 x 40’. Estimate: $100/150,000 SOLD: $126,000

Abercrombie’s 1956 oil on Masoniate Giraffe and Moon demolished its $70,000  high estimate when it sold for an astounding $182,700. An important piece in Abercrombie’s oeuvre, the painting demonstrates her skills in depicting real life in “evocative and mysterious ways,” according to the auction house.

“We were delighted by the results throughout the sale, which highlighted that the market for American artists ranging from impressionists to regionalists and modernists is strong,” says Pauline Archambault, Hindman’s fine art specialist. “The variety of landscapes offered in the sale particularly confirmed the broad range of appeal that this material enjoys, from Coppedge’s idiosyncratic impressionist strand to Avery’s distinct stylized mountain view. As for Giraffe and Moon, the price it achieved proved, once again, that Hindman is uniquely positioned to market Abercrombie’s work with the highest results.”

William Trost Richards (1833-1905), Seascape, 1902. Oil on canvas, 30½ x 52¼ in., signed and dated lower left: ‘WmT. Richards’. Property from the Private Collection of Jamae Van Eyck. Estimate: $30/50,000 SOLD: $59,850

Fern Isabel Coppedge (1883-1951), The Lock Keepers Lodge. Oil on canvas, 18¼ x 20 in., signed lower right: ‘Fern I Coppedge’. Property from the Collection of Stanley B. Slocum. Estimate: $30/50,000 SOLD: $59,850

Other major lots were Avery’s 1947 landscape Mountain Lake, which achieved $126,000, besting its $100,000 low estimate; as well as Coppedge’s The Lock Keeper’s Lodge and Winter Scene, each selling for $59,850.
A beautiful 1902 seascape by William Trost Richards, simply titled Seascape, brought in $59,850. In addition, Portrait of a Girl (Miss Willard) by William Merritt Chase pushed past its $25,000 high estimate when it sold for $31,500, as did Wolf Kahn’s Line of Dark Trees & Weather Front (est. $15/25,000) when it achieved a fantastic $40,950.
