Thomaston Place Auction Galleries hosts two major exhibitions this summer: the three-day Splendor 2023 from July 7 to 9, and the three-day Grandeur 2023 from August 25 to 27. Each sale will include important American artwork and rarities. Highlights of historic art across both sales include a circa 1920 oil on canvas by Robert Spencer; a drawing by outsider artist Bill Traylor; an impasto knifework oil painting of mountains under a sunlit sky by Etel Adnan; and a study of pirates for “Treasure Island” by N.C. Wyeth.
The sales will also present original works by other major American artists like Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, Thomas Hart Benton and more.
The auctions will begin at 11:00 a.m. EST each day. Catalogs will be available for both auctions, as well as an extensive schedule of in-gallery preview times for each sale. All lots will be available for viewing at www.thomastonauction.com.

Copley Fine Art Auctions holds its 18th annual Sporting Sale in mid July. This major auction, consisting of over 500 lots, offers buyers the opportunity to acquire exceptional paintings, antique decoys, bird carvings, folk art and powder tins from important curated collections. The auction will include offerings from important estates and collections, including Thomas M. Evans Jr., a descendant of Charles Porter Schutt and Phyllis Moxham du Pont, a descendant of Thomas Coleman du Pont, and a number of other private collections.
Important paintings in the sale include Aiden Lassell Ripley’s watercolor Dove Shooting (est. $30/50,000), Thomas Blinks’ oil on canvas English Pointers (est. $30/50,000) and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait’s oil on board Quail and Chicks, estimated at $20,000 to $30,000, to name a few.
The live-streamed auction begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, and will utilize phone, absentee and internet bidding on three different online platforms, including CopleyLive.

Summer Sale
Eldred’s annual Summer Sale will feature an exceptional variety of fresh-to-market material to be held over two sessions, including everything from fine art to fine furniture.
Featured in the July sale are more than 200 paintings, with noteworthy lots including Widow Walks by Ralph E. Cahoon, Jr., estimated at $50,000 to $80,000; as well as a harbor scene by Hayley Lever; a flying white-winged scoter by Frank Weston Benson; and a portrait of a boy holding a dog titled His Only Love by John George Brown, each estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. A wide array of 19th-century paintings, contemporary abstract works and European pieces will also be available in the upcoming sale.
“This is a remarkably balanced group of material, from some nice early portraits and landscapes to great contemporary works by living artists,” says Joshua Eldred, president of the firm. “The Provincetown section is particularly strong, and I anticipate a lot of interest. There is also a fabulous single-owner collection of works by artists associated with the Lynn Beach painters that should be a highlight.”
