Spring Sale
$2.6 million
American paintings drove strong results at Shannon’s April 27 Spring Sale. The 139-lot sale sold nearly 90 percent and grossed $2.6 million. Most of the lots offered came from private collections. The top lot in the auction was a colorful, dynamic composition by Maurice Prendergast depicting a beach scene in Boston. The piece sold for $162,500, topping its high estimate of $150,000. Other classic examples of American art that achieved stellar results include a John Fulton Folinsbee titled Canal Lane, which soared past its high estimate when it achieved $81,250; and a classic snowy Guy C. Wiggins scene called 5th Ave at 42nd Street that brought in $62,500.

Spring California & American Fine Art
John Moran Auctioneers’ recent Spring California & American Fine Art auction offered fresh-to-market artworks from private and public collections throughout California, the Southwest, as well as a group of important early California works. Leading the sale was artwork by Edgar Alwin Payne, Sydney Mortimer Laurence, John Marshall Gamble, Marion Wachtel, Carl Oscar Borg and Charles Reiffel. 

Once again proving the timelessness of his early American words, Payne’s Fishing Boats West Coast of France (est. $30/40,000) ultimately achieved $59,375. Another favorite early American landscape painter featured in the sale was Laurence, whose Mount McKinley, estimated at $20,000 to $30,000, achieved $43,750. Additionally, well-known Santa Barbara artist John Marshall Gamble’s Wild Lilac – Santa Barbara (est. $20/30,000) sold for $34,375.

$903,000
Santa Fe Art Auction’s online-only sale, Art of the West, brought in a total of $903,000. Within the 583-lot sale, Art of the West results demonstrated the continued strength of classic Western art, both historic and contemporary with an emerging demographic of new collectors. Art of the West saw especially strong results across the board for sculpture, with highlights including a piece by Tony Abeyta, whose work exemplifies contemporary Native American art, alongside Dave McGary, whose work is classic Western.
