Hindman Auctions

The strength of the art market has remained robust overall. We are pleased to still see participation from bidders from across the world at all levels of collecting. Our American and European auctions have seen steady sell-through rates with lots on average beating their estimates.
With more of our customers bidding through the Digital Bid Room, Hindman’s online and mobile bidding platform, which we launched at the beginning of 2021, it’s always interesting to see the new bidders we gain each sale and where they are coming from. We are looking forward to welcoming new bidders to our new Chicago location on Carroll Street next year, as well as offering more dedicated American art auctions.
We have seen private collectors, dealers and institutions focusing on works by female artists, artists of color and LGBTQ artists, which are all receiving well overdue attention. There has been a particularly strong interest in surrealism, and we are thrilled to be planning an auction in early February with a surreal focus. It’s been clear from major art world events over the past few years, from the Venice Biennale to recent art fairs and auctions, that surrealism is continuing to draw increasing amounts of attention.
We’ve also continued to see significant attention paid to works by Orville Bulman, Robert Henri, Dale Nichols and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, to name just a few.
We are especially excited about female artists in the upcoming sales in general, but are particularly looking forward to offering works by surrealist artists Gertrude Abercrombie and Julie Thecla this year. With Hindman’s Chicago roots, it’s also been exciting to see how the market for Abercrombie’s works has flourished over the past few years, and Thecla is another important character when looking back at the development of surrealism. We are eager to continue to raise awareness
of these talented artists.
