All year long, a string of blue-chip art shows take up residence at New York’s Park Avenue Armory and 2023 promises to bring more of the same. The year kicks off with one of its finest—The Winter Show, a 10-day event beginning January 20 that brings together more than 66 of the world’s top dealers and experts in the fine and decorative arts from antiquity to the present day.

Robert Reid (1862-1929), In the Garden, ca. 1901. Oil on canvas, 30 x 27 in. Exhibitor: Debra Force Fine Art.

The 2023 edition welcomes new exhibitors from Europe, South America and the United States, expanding the show’s breadth of esteemed dealers and experts. Dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of quality in the art market, each object in  The Winter Show is vetted for authenticity, date and condition by a committee of 120 experts from the United States and Europe.

Among the esteemed new exhibitors of American fine art are Philadelphia’s Dolan/Maxwell, presenting distinguished modernist and contemporary works from 1930 to the present; Jonathan Cooper, a London dealer of modern and contemporary paintings and works on paper; MacConnal-Mason Gallery, also out of London, specializing in 19th and 20th-century paintings and sculpture; and Rountree Tryon Galleries from Petworth, United Kingdom, featuring works of maritime, wildlife, sporting and topographical art from the 18th-century to the present day.

Distinguished returning exhibitors include Debra Force Fine Art, specializing in 18th through mid-20th century paintings, drawing and sculpture and whose show piece by Robert Reid (1862-1929) is featured here; Thomas Colville Fine Art, presenting American and European paintings, drawing and sculpture; Hirschl & Adler Galleries which specializes in historic American and European paintings, works on paper, decorative arts, and prints and sculpture (an example of which by Charles Ephraim Burchfield (1893-1967) is pictured here); and Thistlethwaite Americana working in 18th to 20th-century Americana paintings, prints, decorative arts and furniture.

Charles Ephraim Burchfield (1893–1967), The Butterfly Tree, 1960. Watercolor on paper, 15 x 19 in. Exhibitor: Hirschl & Adler Galleries.

In addition to the impressive art and antiques showcased at The Winter Show, there will be many special evening events and multidisciplinary programming throughout the duration of the fair. Panel discussions led by industry experts explore timely topics such as “Reimagining the Museum: Between Art, Architecture and Community,” “What is the New Eclectic Taste of the Times?” and “Portraits of Power.”

“We are thrilled to return to our home at the Park Avenue Armory for the 2023 edition of The Winter Show,” says executive director Helen Allen. “It’s a pleasure to welcome back new and returning exhibitors from across the globe, as well as the passionate connoisseurs, collectors and visitors who make the fair one of the most celebrated events of the season. Our commitment to quality remains unyielding as we adapt to the shifting demographics and tastes of the art market, and we look forward to presenting dynamic and engaging programming during this exciting moment of increased interest in fine and decorative arts.”
