Market Report

What we’re hearing from galleries and auction houses across the country.

Market conditions are improving as visitors return to New York City. Collectors’ trepidations are easing as Covid cases recede. Rising inflation is focusing attention on physical assets and financially minded clients are motivated by hedging strategies as well as aesthetic appeal.

We are seeing some younger collectors with interest in 19th-century American paintings. The vast disparity between the value of the classic, versus in vogue post-war and contemporary works, is encouraging them to reconsider great paintings from the previous century.

Fine examples by 20th-century modernists attract buyers. Works by Milton Avery, Charles Burchfield and Marsden Hartley are especially appealing. Those who believe that paintings of the Hudson River School are no longer of interest are likely formulating their opinion based on the dearth of paintings offered at public auction. However, our best examples of this genre always command attention and we have sold several outstanding examples recently.

[As of late], we are intrigued by the work of a young artist named Benjamin Hazen. He is the winner of PAFA’s prestigious Judith McGregor Caldwell Purchase Prize. His reinterpretation of still life is an undeniable contribution to modern painting. His work may be seen
at our gallery and on our website.
