For the fall 2022 edition of their California & American Fine Art Auction, John Moran Auctioneers has curated an impressive selection of art that highlights the beauty of the people, places and landscapes from coast to coast. The fine art in this blue-chip sale leads with several strong 19th-century works by George Catlin; impressionist, tonalist and occasional pointilist Paul Cornoyer; and Colin Campbell Cooper. In additon to being a painter, George Catlin (1796-1872)was an adventurer, lawyer and author who specialized in portraits of Native Americans inspired by multiple trips to the American West in the 1830s. A piece by Colin Campbell Cooper, Cathedral at Le Martigues, France—representative of the architectural work he is best known for—is estimated to fetch $30,000 on the high end. Edgar Alwain Payne’s piece, Ediza Lake, near Mammoth, Eastern Sierras, is an exquisite example of the painter’s favorite subject matter and has been given a high value estimate of $50,000.

Payne was not alone in his captivation with the High Sierra Mountains of California. His painting is joined by the stunning watercolor, Yosemite in Winter, by Gunnar Widforss, the Swedish American painter best known for his landscapes featuring the country’s national parks.
There will also be be portraits from artists such as American social realist painter Moses Soyer, Ashcan School founder John Sloan and Russian Empire-born painter Ivan Gregorewitch Olinsky. Landscapes by Pasadena, California, artist Orrin A. White and acclaimed East Coast impressionist Guy Carleton Wiggins will also be among the auction’s exciting offerings.

The auction is further rounded out by nautical scenes brought to life in the works of Mauritz Frederick Hendrick De Haas, Sydney M. Laurence and Donald Teague, as well as multiple lots from Christopher Blossom and Sam Hyde Harris.
