Fresh-to-the-market, quality American art from private collections and institutions will be available during the October 27 Fine Art Auction at Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers. 

American Impressionist paintings by New Hope artists Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber and John F. Folinsbee will be offered for the first time in over a decade from an important private collection. Redfield’s 1917 Drifted Road depicts an early winter landscape with dappled sunlight (est. $200/300,000); Garber’s Elm Bough, is included in the artist’s catalog raisonné where the provenance traces it all the way back to the original sale (estimate $200/300,000); and Folinsbee’s Goat Hill, painted in 1923, traveled to the 1924 Texas State Fair as part of a loan exhibition of American paintings. The piece has a presale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. 

Three works by members of the important American Ashcan group “The Eight” can be found in the sale as well. The leading lot is a Maurice Prendergast oil depicting a Beach Scene in Boston, estimated at $175,000 to $275,000. From the same collection is a Robert Henri portrait of an Irish child (est. $100/150,000) and a rare John Sloan oil titled Croquet from around 1908, expected to bring in between $25,000 and $35,000.

Featuring over 200 works of art from private collections and estates, Grogan & Co.’s Fine Art Auction takes place on November 11 beginning at 11 a.m.

The sale includes prominent 19th-century and 20th-century American art from the likes of Gertrude Abercrombie, John Marin, Richard Estes and Alfred Thompson Bricher. Abercrombie’s 1937 oil Slaughterhouse has a presale estimate of $15,00 to $25,000. A pastoral scene of a group of grazing cows painted by Edward Mitchell Bannister in 1893 is expected to sell between $50,000 and $80,000, while Bricher’s marine scene Grand Manan is estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. 

Also in the sale is the Frank Weston Benson Collection of a Massachusetts Gentleman, which comprises 16 paintings by Frank Benson from the collection of a “Massachusetts Gentleman,” representing the breadth of the artist’s oeuvre, from sporting scenes to winter landscapes and Caribbean views. An auction preview will take place at the firm’s Beacon Hill gallery from October 31 to November 4.

Prints & Multiples Online Auction

For six days, from November 5 to 10, Waddington’s Auctioneers & Appraisers will hold its Prints & Multiples Online Auction. The virtual sale features a wide array of fine art by major international artists like Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse and Romare Bearden, among others.

Highlights in the forthcoming sale include a 1975 screenprint by Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, (F&S., ii. 140), From the Mick Jagger Portfolio. The piece is estimated at $60,000 to $90,000. Additionally, Roy Lichtenstein’s lithograph, woodcut and screenprint View from the Window, from the Landscape Series, 1984, has a presale estimate of $90,000 to $120,000.

Fall Sale

Eldred’s upcoming Fall Sale will include more than 200 paintings across a wide range of works, from 19th-century American art to 20th-century Vietnamese works. A large variety of early to contemporary Provincetown School paintings will be offered, notably works by Pauline Lennards Palmer, John Whorf and John Dowd. Other important lots include a John Steuart Curry portrait, a Benjamin Champney White Mountain scene and an Emile Albert Gruppe coastal scene. 

The Fall Sale takes place at Eldred’s headquarters on Cape Cod, at 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, Massachusetts. In-person, online, phone and absentee bidding will be available. An illustrated catalog will be available online or by mail.

Bonhams holds its next California Art sale on November 21, depicting grand and sweeping scenes of the Golden State by some of the foremost 20th-century artists. Among highlights in the upcoming sale is an oil on canvas by Alfred R. Mitchell titled El Capitan Dam painted in 1930. The piece is expected to fetch between $50,000 and $75,000. Bidders should also be on the lookout for Selden Connor Gile’s oil Destination, Marin County, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000 as well as Thomas Hill and Virgil Williams Fishing in Yosemite by Thomas Hill (est. $15/25,000). The auction will be held at Bonhams’ Los Angeles, California, location.
