When one thinks of Nedra Matteucci Galleries, art of the Southwest likely comes to mind. While that is very much the focus of the gallery, which expanded to include more living artists when Nedra and Richard Matteucci acquired it in 1988, their collection was built on the foundation of historic works that emerged from Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the early 20th century. Works by pioneering artists of the region such as Nicolai Fechin, Eric Sloane, Freemont Ellis, Joseph Henry Sharp and Leon Gaspard, achieved what all artists strive for—to break free of the confines of genre categorization.Leon Gaspard (1882-1964), Passage de la Oka, 1915. Oil on silk, 30 x 22¼ in.

When the gallery opened its doors in 1972, it was already destined for distinction. After all, its first owner was Forrest Fenn, the eccentric art dealer who earned greater fame many decades later when he inspired droves of treasure-hunters to set out on a quest to find a cache he buried “somewhere in the West.” W. Herbert Dunton (1878-1936), Study #55. Oil on paper board, 10 x 8 in.

B.J.O. Nordfeldt (1878-1975), Untitled (Still Life). Oil on canvas, 29 x 36 in.

Comprised of several historic buildings situated on nearly two acres enclosed by earthy, stone and adobe walls, and a nearly two-acre sculpture garden installed by the Matteuccis, the picturesque compound continues to be a popular destination for art lovers, collectors and many notable luminaries.

The focus of Nedra Matteucci Galleries’ 50th anniversary show will be on 30 of their living artists, but in homage to the artistic roots of the region—and the gallery—a selection of historically significant works by Fechin, Sharp, Gaspard and Taos Society of Artists’ founder and first president, Eanger Irving Couse will also be on display. E. Irving Couse (1866-1936), Crane Hunter. Oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in.

“Through the years there have been many contributing factors to the gallery’s success, primarily loyal clients and collectors of quality artwork,” says gallery owner Nedra Matteucci. “New Mexico has such a rich cultural history; it has been an honor for me and the gallery to play a part in the preservation of New Mexico’s historic art and in shaping the Santa Fe art market and community [of] Santa Fe.” —
