California, American, and Western Fine Art
John Moran Auctioneers is holding the first of their bi-annual California, American, & Western Fine Art sale this May. Featured in the upcoming sale are nearly 100 works from important American artists like Granville Redmond, Maurice Braun, John Frost, William McCloskey and Sydney Laurence. Leading the offerings is a quintessential oil on canvas created by Redmond in 1915, Landscape with poppies and lupine, estimated at $70,000 to $90,000. This work is coming to auction on the heels of a long-awaited retrospective of Redmond’s work.

Another highlight is California artist John Frost’s Misty view of the San Gabriel Foothills, an oil on linen capturing the San Gabriel Foothills, painted just two years after the artist settled in Pasadena. This work has a presale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. Representing watercolor in the sale is Los Angeles-based Emil Kosa Jr., whose Hermosa Beach (est. $5/7,000) depicts a pier scene with figures milling about, fishing and enjoying a sunny day at the beach.

Texas Art Signature Auction
Julian Onderdonk’s 1909 Winter Morning is one of the top lots in Heritage Auctions’ upcoming Texas Art Signature Auction. The piece, expected to bring in between $20,000 and $30,000, is an example of a grittier and more tonalist work by Onderdonk, often referred to as “the father of Texas painting.” Bidders should also watch out for abstract realist Alexandre Hogue’s 1957 untitled watercolor (est. $12/18,000) as well as his pastel Chief Alsate’s Profile, Big Bend study (est. $10/15,000) and Waterless Area, Big Bend (est. $10/15,000).

“This is an exceptional auction, because modern and contemporary art really shines, along with traditional Texas art,” says Atlee Phillips, Heritage Auctions Texas art director. “The strength in this sale is really in its diversity. We are very excited to offer this extraordinary selection, including a strong group of modern and contemporary art as it gains more and more popularity.”
