Exhibitors, curators and collectors all reported a strong return for this year’s FOG Design+Art

The eighth edition of the FOG Design+Art fair came back strong this past January 20 to 23 after a hiatus in 2021 due to the pandemic. Kicking off the fair was a Preview Gala at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture on Wednesday, January 19, benefitting educational programs and exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. FOG saw excellent attendance throughout the four days, with exhibitors, curators, collectors and attendees noting well-curated presentations, robust sales and fantastic artwork. Featured at the 2022 fair was an international selection of 45 art and design galleries, including 10 dealers who participated for the first time. An overview of the 2022 edition of FOG Design+Art. “This was RYAN LEE’s first FOG fair, and it was a huge success,” says Jeff Lee, owner of New York-based RYAN LEE Gallery. “Our time here has been invaluable in furthering relationships with collectors and West Coast institutions. We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with clients again in a safe way after years of in-person separation due to COVID.”

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery’s inaugural presentation at FOG Design+Art, titled Romare Bearden: Collage/In Context, was a major success. “A dual presentation of exhibitions exploring the evolution of collage practices throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, [the presentation] achieved sales to both museums and private collections and gave the gallery the opportunity to reconnect with the region’s most serious collectors,” the gallery notes. Notable sales for the gallery overall include works by Bearden, Gertrude Greene, Grace Hartigan and Betye Saar. Pace Gallery had a number of important sales, including two works by Sam Gilliam, one being a 1971 painting that sold for $750,000. In addition, Gladstone Gallery reported the 2022 FOG fair as one of the most successful editions the gallery has ever had, with a number of Robert Bechtle drawings each selling for $35,000, alongside many other major sales.

The next FOG Design+Art is set for January 19 to 22, 2023, at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion. —
