Many are looking forward to the Nantucket Summer Antiques Show, now in its sixth year of presenting the public with traditional and modern art, fine antiques, midcentury modern furniture, garden antiques and accessories, among other items. There will be 33 exhibitors this year, including seven dedicated fine art dealers such as Rehs Galleries, Callaghan’s of Shrewsbury, David Brooker Fine Art and L. Parker Stephenson Photographs.

“We are feeling very positive about the ability to once again present a live event,” says Mary Shapiro, president of the Antiques Council, “especially so on Nantucket, where there has always been enthusiastic interest in a fine antiques and art show during the summer season.”
Last year, due to COVID, the show was strictly virtual, with all items offered on online. However, this year will be back in full swing and on full display at the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club, “with a virtual and in-person preview event benefiting the Nantucket Historical Society, as part of that organization’s Nantucket by Design event,” says Kaye Gregg, director of shows for the Council.

The show will have an early bird preview both online and in-person on August 5. The preview will have a guest appearance by renowned interior designer Alexa Hampton, who will “preview” her favorite picks from this year’s show “and will discuss how to incorporate those items into modern living,” says the Council. Following the early access will be the preview party.

While the show includes a variety of antiques and collectibles, such as antique and vintage jewelry, furniture and marine antiques, there will be plenty of fine art paintings, sculptures and photographs to go around. There’s a lot of excitement over pieces such as Henry Scott’s (1911-2005) Rough Seas, depicting a dramatic scene of a ship taking on water; 1885 America’s Cup: Puritan vs Genesta by Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921); and Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange’s (1877-1958) Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, all brought to sale by Rehs Galleries.

David Brooker Fine Art will be featuring invaluable works such as Mary Ethel Young Hunter’s (1878-1936) A Quiet Moment, a late 19th-century oil painting depicting a woman in her garden feeding the birds. This celebrated artist studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where she also exhibited. She worked as a portrait artist in Scotland and England, until her family moved to the New York City, and eventually Taos, New Mexico.
See works like this and more, at the Nantucket Summer Antiques Show, open to the public beginning Friday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9. Ticket information and show times can be found on the show website. —
