The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, New York, recently acquired a 1916 landscape by American realist George Bellows from the bequest of longtime supporter and former trustee Evie Muller. The oil on plywood, titled Freeman Young’s Place (Matinicus Island, Maine), depicts a small holding of a fisherman named Freeman Young on Matinicus Island, Maine, and is part of a series Bellows completed during an excursion to the Pine Tree State in 1916. Not shown to the public since 1923, shortly before Bellows’ death in 1925, the painting is instantly eye-catching with grass, trees and shrubs of saturated greens and skies of vibrant blues. George Bellows (1882-1925), Freeman Young’s Place (Matinicus Island, Maine), 1916. Muller, who passed away in March 2020, supported every major initiative at The Hyde Collection for 30 years, including the restoration of Hyde House and the opening of the Feibes & Schmitt Gallery. “With her humor, grace, generosity, intelligence and lack of pretension, Evie raised the bar by simply walking in the room,” says former Hyde director Randy Suffolk. “It’s fitting,” adds director of curatorial affairs Jonathan Canning, “that whenever this painting is exhibited or reproduced, the accompanying credit line will always articulate the deep and indivisible bond between Evie and The Hyde.” —
