Spring represents many things for many people—the promise of new beginnings, the flourishing of new life, hope and light after the darker, colder months of winter. Beginning March 9, Vose Galleries in Boston celebrates this bright and hopeful season with an exhibition of historic works. Titled Sensations of Spring, and running through April 20, the show will feature artists such as Louise Upton Brumback, Aldro T. Hibbard, Edith A. Scott, Laura Coombs Hills, Charles Gordon Harris and others.Edith A. Scott (1877-1978), In the Greenhouse, 1917. Oil on canvas board, 165⁄8 x 223⁄8 in., signed lower right: ‘E. Scott’.

Charles Gordon Harris (1891-1981), Spring on the Farm. Oil on canvas, 24 x 32 in., signed lower right: ‘C. GORDON HARRIS’.

“This year in particular we are looking forward to the coming of spring and its rejuvenating properties. Here in New England, the earth drastically turns over to become a warmer and gentler place, fostering blooms of creativity and encouraging studio-bound artists to seek inspiration outdoors,” says Catharine Holmes of Vose Galleries. “In Sensations of Spring, we’ve carefully selected over 20 masterful depictions of the season. From the onset of snowmelt rushing down a mountainside in Aldro T. Hibbard’s Spring Freshet, to parishioners making their way to church in Aiden Ripley’s Snow at Easter, to a bouquet of daffodils being admired in Lee Lufkin Kaula’s The Green Shade, we are pleased to share with you our selection of paintings exalting the season.”Aldro T. Hibbard (1886-1972), Spring Freshet. Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in., signed lower right: ‘A. T. Hibbard’.

Lee Lufkin Kaula (1865-1957), The Green Shade. Oil on canvas, 341⁄8 x 24 in., signed lower right: ‘Lee Lufkin Kaula’.

From pastoral scenes to gardens lush with florals in bloom to naturescapes and city scenes, the paintings in Sensations of Spring invite mellow sentiments and a growing feeling of cheer. Scott’s 1917 oil on canvas board In the Greenhouse has a warm glow to the flowers growing in a greenhouse, while the sun shines through the windows. Brumback’s The Garden Trellis takes the viewer through a garden of many colors, and Harris’ Spring on the Farm is a journey through vivid green pastures and thriving foliage under thick, billowy clouds. Continuously, we are reminded that there are always chances to start again. —
