What we're hearing from galleries, auction houses and museums across the country

A view of the gallery interior of Meredith Ward Fine Art.

Even as our interactions move online, collectors continue to find joy in viewing and buying works of art. The market for American art remains selective, as it has been for a while, but when people find something that appeals to them, or something they’ve been wanting to acquire for a long time, they don’t hesitate.

American modernism and mid-20th-century abstraction remain the cornerstones of our inventory and continue to be the areas that we find collectors are focusing on. Most of our sales right now are going to private collectors, although museum curators continue to be on the lookout for things on their wish lists. Our recent sales were mostly to collectors with whom we have long-standing relationships. We also finalized the sale of a work by Pat Lasch to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Over the summer, we had an online exhibition of women artists titled She / Her / Hers, which did very well. Works by women artists are in high demand both among collectors and museum curators who are trying to fill in gaps in their collections. We are particularly excited about the work of Flora Crockett. We’ve had two exhibitions of Crockett’s work, and we recently sold one of her paintings to the Yale University Art Gallery. —
