Scenes of New York City
A major gift of 113 works of art from some of the most prominent names in American art has recently come into the possession of the New York Historical Society. The gift comes from collectors Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld’s, Scenes of New York City collection, which contains 130 works dating from the mid-19th through the 21st-centuries. Artists represented include such esteemed names as Marc Chagall, David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Yvonne Jacquette, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Norman Rockwell and Andy Warhol.

The Met reopens
The Metropolitan Museum of Art reopens to the public on Saturday, August 29 after having been closed since March 13. Previously, it had been over a century since The Met had been closed for more than three consecutive days. “Perhaps now more than ever the Museum can serve as a reminder of the power of the human spirit and the capacity of art to bring comfort, inspire resilience, and help us better understand each other and the world around us,” says Daniel H. Weiss, president and CEO. The Met reopens with three new exhibitions: Making The Met, 1870-2020; The Roof Garden Commission: Héctor Zamora, Lattice Detour and Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle.

Gayle Greenhill Collection gift
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City was recently gifted a collection of photographs from the Gayle Greenhill Collection. Greenhill was immensely involved with the MoMA’s department of photography for nearly 25 years, from 1989 to 2013. The collection was created in her memory by husband Robert F. Greenhill. The monumental gift is made up of more than 300 works by 103 photographers including Edward Steichen, William Eggleston, Jan Groover, Robert Mapplethorpe, Charles Sheeler, Cindy Sherman, JoAnn Verburg, and Edward Weston.

Filling big shoes
Christie’s recently announced that Alexis Maggiar has joined the major auction house as international director of the Department of Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
For more than ten years Maggiar has contributed to significant discoveries in the field, setting numerous auction records and participating in the success of collector’s sales in his category in both Paris and New York. He will report to Cécile Verdier, President of Christie’s France, who will oversee this international department for which Paris remains the historic auction capital. —
