Skinner Inc. will hold its American & European Works of Art sale at the start of the new year. The two-day sale begins January 23 with session I offering prints, photographs and multiples, while session II on January 24 brings paintings and sculpture. Amongst its diversity of offerings, which include more contemporary works, session II is where collectors will find primarily historic American fine art, with works from artists like Sanford Robinson Gifford, Fitz Henry Lane, Charles Burchfield, Theodore Butler and Alexander Pope Jr. hitting the auction block.

Featuring strong American works, a highlight in the sale is Gifford’s Lago di Nemi, estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. This atmospheric oil painting was a study for Gifford’s major Italian landscape, Lake Nemi, in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art. Another fascinating and unusual American work is Blue Ribbon Winners in the Lawson Kennels (est. $15/25,000) by Pope. The painting was commissioned by Thomas W. Lawson, a wildly successful Boston businessman who made a fortune selling copper, earning him the moniker “The Copper King.”

The powerhouse Western art show and auction celebrates its 30th year from January 24 to 27 in Mesa, Arizona. The auction, held at the Phoenix Marriott Mesa, features an array of Western art and artifacts coming from some of the most esteemed historic American artists, such as Maynard Dixon, Charles M. Russell, Edward Borein, Edward S. Curtis, Olaf Wieghorst, George Phippen and others. Highlights in the upcoming sale include Curtis’ Nez Perce Man, a silver print on board estimated at $6,000 to $9,000; several oil paintings by Wieghorst, including Pintos (est. $15/20,000) and Reflections (est. $10/15,000); as well as a watercolor by Edward S. Paxson, Cheyenne Brave, which has a presale estimate of $10,000 to $14,000.
